Last Winter Snow

Cerutti’s Statement

“Capturing the light is everything!! As a plein air painter, it is always the light… that I remember most about any location. It is my inspiration…. Its elusive quality can transform a figure or a landscape in just a matter of seconds. I strive to convey that sense of place by capturing its fleeting magic.”

Analysis

Cerutti’s statement is very focused on what drives her work, so her statement is the shortest of my four samples. She states very plainly that light is her “inspiration,” and that can be seen in her piece called Last Winter Snow. This painting seems to be focused on “capturing the fleeting magic” of sunset lighting on snow, so even though the idea of doing that seems a bit abstract, Cerutti executes it well both in her painting and in her statement. Despite the short length of Cerutti’s writing, I think it is ultimately appropriate for her work–the plain, simple, and to-the-point nature of her statement applies to her paintings as well. Paintings are what people most commonly see in terms of art mediums, so Cerutti’s work doesn’t need as much explaining. She focuses on the stand-out trait of her work (the lighting), thus making her statement and her artwork easy to understand. Out of my four samples, this is the one I would most like to see in an art gallery. The others are just as successful in describing what makes their art unique, but Cerutti’s statement gets right to the point and doesn’t talk about anything too abstract, giving viewers like me more time to appreciate her work.
