Jensen’s Statement
“Karl’s work embodies the articulation of the human spirit, from serene moments of daily life to those of playful joy. He strives to capture the essence of an expression of a gesture, drawing the viewer in with an aura of a moment frozen in time. His work, ranging from small indoor bronzes to life-size outdoor pieces and fountains, can be found in collections across the country.”
Analysis
Jensen’s Statement, overall, is one of the more objective ones that I’ve seen and is the most objective of my samples–he doesn’t use personal pronouns, instead opting to speak about himself and his work in the third person. He does, however, still give an idea of the driving force behind his work. This statement summarizes the common themes of his work, which can be seen in this piece entitled Ascending. Jensen is able to capture “a moment frozen in time” that expresses a feeling of serenity. Despite the somewhat detached writing style, I think Jensen’s statement demonstrates another effective method of writing an artist statement. By taking himself out of the equation with third-person writing, Jensen shifts the audience’s focus to his work. His sculptures, after all, aren’t about him; they’re about the joy and freedom the people in his sculptures feel in their personal moment of time. Jensen’s statement also takes a moment to say that his work can be found across the country. Even though it doesn’t say specifically where, none of my other samples do that.
